Election

As election season has picked up, my phone has too.

Calls. Texts. Voicemails. Mailers.

Candidate after candidate wanting me to know who they are, what they believe, and why I should support them. If I’m honest, I’ve hung up on more than a few before they ever finished their pitch. But here’s the interesting thing—I still learned who some of those candidates were and what they stood for. Their message made it through, even when I wasn’t particularly interested in hearing it.

That got me thinking…

What if followers of Jesus were as passionate about sharing the gospel as candidates are about winning an election?

Would everyone want to hear it? Of course not.

Would some get tired of us talking about Jesus? Probably.

Would some tune us out? Absolutely.

But wouldn’t some of the gospel still stick?

The Bible tells us that “the gospel… is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16). We don’t believe people are saved because we are persuasive speakers. We believe people are saved because God works through the message of the gospel.

So maybe the question isn’t, “Will everyone listen?”

Maybe the question is, “Is one changed life worth the risk of someone thinking I’m a little over the top?”

Candidates are willing to risk being ignored, rejected, or even laughed at because they believe their cause is worth it.

Shouldn’t those of us who have the greatest message ever given be even more willing?

May we never be more passionate about earthly elections than we are about the eternal King.

Someone’s forever may depend on hearing the gospel one more time.

“How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed?… And how shall they hear without a preacher?” (Romans 10:14)

Let’s be faithful to tell the greatest story ever told.
