Acts 17:16-34 | Finding Your Mission Field

There was a time when Athens was considered one of the most educated, sophisticated, and intellectual cities in the world. It was filled with philosophy, competing worldviews, and countless idols. As Paul walked through its streets, he didn’t respond with fear, and he didn’t respond with anger.

He responded with a broken heart.

Acts 17 tells us that “his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols.” He wasn’t grieved because people disagreed with him. He was grieved because people created in the image of God were searching everywhere for hope except in the One who could truly save them.

I wonder what Paul would see if he walked through our communities today.

Our idols may not be carved from stone, but they are just as real. We chase success, wealth, comfort, politics, sports, entertainment, relationships, and even our own identity, hoping one of them will satisfy the emptiness only Christ can fill.

As followers of Jesus, we have to be careful. It’s easy to become frustrated by the culture around us. It’s easy to spend more time criticizing darkness than shining light into it.

But the church was never called to retreat from the world or rage against it.

We were called to engage it with the hope of the gospel.

The people in your office, your classroom, your neighborhood, your ball team, or the checkout line at the grocery store are not interruptions to your day. They may very well be the reason God placed you there.

Acts 17 reminds us that God has determined where we live and when we live. That means your address isn’t an accident. Your job isn’t an accident. Your school isn’t an accident. Your circle of influence isn’t an accident.

God has already placed you in your mission field.

So before we complain about how dark the world has become, maybe we should ask a different question:

Does my heart break for the people who are living in that darkness?

Consider this challenge this week- ask yourself :

Who are the three people God has already placed in your life that need to hear about Jesus? Pray for them. Love them. Look for opportunities to point them to Christ.

Your mission field may be closer than you think.
