Governed

Usually this blog has an intended purpose of taking some event or situation in our culture and reminding us of the Biblical truth.  Generally, the hope is to say: this is the situation we are seeing on the news but this is what the Word of God has to say about that.  The hope is that we would be able to put Biblical light into a situation or event and remind believers of the sovereignty of God.

This week though, I changed the topic - this morning - which is very much against my normal process. I usually stick with my preparations like Linus to his blanket (hopefully everyone remembers Charlie Brown).   This time though, something happened in Bible study last night that has forced my hand a bit!

We were studying in Luke 12:42-48. As the conversation continued, we were reminded that we see those who claim to be servants of the master who decide to begin walking their own path.

Sometimes it’s because they think the master is gone so long that he isn’t returning.

Sometimes they just decide they are able to be their own God and abuse the freedom and power they have in their life.

The issue is that the master will return, when it isn’t expected and the judgement will be severe!  Scripture teaches us the servant who falls away in that way was never truly a servant in the first place but simply paying lip service.

The sobering truth is that our obedience to the Word of God is the greatest evidence that we are truly surrendered to Jesus.  I am afraid that we have seen a drift in our culture to where we almost have decided that if someone wants to know about God they have the option to come to church, and do so, and I’m not gonna go to them with that stuff.

We act as if simply going to church and giving our tithes are the measurements of obedience.

We listen to a sermon from the Bible and shout AMEN, but walk out the door unchanged.

Let us be reminded that not being surrendered to the Word of God is not being surrendered to God.  Jesus died that we would be made righteous and stand justified before our God who is Holy- but the confession isn’t asking to be saved from Hell, the confession is being surrendered to Jesus as Lord.

The end of the section in Luke 12 (verses 47 and 48) shows us a truth that should shake us a bit.  Being shown the Word of God and the ways of God and refusing them is less tolerable than ignorance to the Word of God.  In fact, this rejection stores up wrath for eternity according to Romans 2.

Let us be moved to the place that we ask God humbly- am I walking in obedience and where I am not please change me!! We must remember the master is coming back - we don’t know when but He is coming back and we have been given clear instructions on what to do until He returns. Let us be humble to the Word of God, submitted to the Word of God, Governed by the Word of God!!
