James 1:19-25 | Rooted in His Word

Most of us looked in a mirror this morning. Maybe the first look wasn’t pretty- hair going everywhere, tired eyes, something that needed to be fixed before we walked out the door. But imagine looking carefully into that mirror, seeing exactly what needed attention, and then simply walking away without changing anything.

James says that’s exactly what we can do with the Word of God.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” — James 1:22

We can hear the sermon.

Read the Bible.

Underline the verse.

Know the stories.

Agree with the doctrine.

Say “Amen.”

And still walk away unchanged.

That’s a dangerous place to be because exposure to God’s Word is not the same thing as submission to God’s Word. James describes Scripture like a mirror.

A mirror doesn’t create what’s wrong—it simply reveals what’s already there.

If I look into God’s Word and it exposes pride, the problem isn’t the mirror.

If it reveals bitterness, the problem isn’t the mirror.

If it confronts my anger, greed, lust, unforgiveness, priorities, speech, relationships, or behavior, the problem isn’t Scripture.

The Word is simply showing me something about myself that I need to see.

And when that happens, I have a choice.

I can argue with the mirror.

I can explain why my situation is different.

I can find someone who tells me what I would rather hear.

I can immediately think about somebody else who really needed that verse!

Or I can pray:

“Lord, show me what is true, and then change whatever in me doesn’t match it.”

James tells us to: Receive the Word.

“Receive with meekness the implanted word…”

Come to Scripture humbly.

God speaks. We listen.

Then:

Respond to the Word.

Don’t merely hear it.

Do it.

If God’s Word tells me to forgive, forgive.

If it exposes sin, repent.

If it commands something I’ve neglected, obey.

If it tells me to reconcile, make the call.

If it tells me to speak, speak.

If it tells me to stop, stop.

And finally:

Remain in the Word.

James describes the person who “looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it.”

Not a quick glance.

Continue.

Because we live in a world with no shortage of voices trying to shape us.

Social media has a voice.

Politics has a voice.

Entertainment has a voice.

Culture has a voice.

Our friends have voices.

Our emotions have a voice.

And if we aren’t careful, we can spend hours every week listening to the world tell us what to believe and give God a few minutes to correct it.

Something is shaping us.

Something is discipling us.

So maybe the question isn’t simply:

“Do I believe the Bible?”

Maybe the harder question is:

“Does the Bible govern me?”

Who gets the final word when Scripture and culture disagree?

Who gets the final word when Scripture and my feelings disagree?

Who gets the final word when Scripture and my desires disagree?

Who gets the final word when God’s Word confronts something I’ve believed or practiced for years?

It’s easy to call Scripture authoritative when it agrees with us.

Authority is revealed when Scripture corrects us.

And that’s what being rooted in the Word looks like.

We don’t read the Bible merely to collect more information.

We open God’s Word asking Him to produce transformation.

Not simply:

“Lord, teach me something new.”

But:

“Lord, make me more like Jesus.”

So this week, open the Word.

Receive it humbly.

Respond to it obediently.

Remain in it continually.

And when God shows you something in the mirror—

don’t walk away unchanged.

Because deep roots produce faithful lives.
