Joel 2:12-17 | Repentance Leads to Revival

Updated: 3 days ago

As we move closer to Easter, I’ve been reflecting on three powerful words from Joel 2:

“Yet even now…”

Joel was speaking to God’s people in a season of devastation. The land had been stripped bare. Stability was shaken. Worship had been disrupted. It was a wake-up call.

And right in the middle of warning came invitation:

“Yet even now,” declares the Lord,

“Return to Me with all your heart…” (Joel 2:12)

Not “You’ve gone too far.”

Not “It’s too late.”

Not “You’ve ruined it.”

But — even now.

That’s grace.

Before we celebrate the empty tomb, it’s worth asking:

Are our hearts ready?

Joel makes something very clear. God is not after outward performance.

“Rend your hearts and not your garments.” (Joel 2:13)

In Joel’s day, people would tear their clothes to show grief. But you could tear your clothes without tearing your heart.

And the Lord says, “I want the heart.”

It’s possible to:

    •    Attend church faithfully

    •    Serve consistently

    •    Sing loudly

…and still grow spiritually cold.

Repentance is not emotional hype.

It’s not religious performance.

It’s not vague promises to “try harder.”

Repentance is agreeing with God about sin, turning from it, and returning to Him.

And here’s the beautiful part — we return not because God is harsh, but because He is merciful.

“For He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love…” (Joel 2:13)

As we approach Easter, the cross reminds us of two things:

    1.    God takes sin seriously.

    2.    God takes saving sinners seriously.

If sin feels small, the cross feels unnecessary.

If sin is seen honestly, the cross becomes glorious.

This season isn’t about louder worship or bigger plans. It’s about the people of God getting serious about being His people who are called by His name.

Where have we grown distracted?

Where have we grown casual?

Where have we become religious but not sensitive to the Spirit?

And hear this again:

Yet even now…

Even now you can return.

Even now you can soften.

Even now God invites you closer.

Revival isn’t manufactured.

It’s granted.

And humble hearts are the soil where it grows.

Let’s prepare the way — not just for a holiday — but for the Lord.
