John 4:31-38 | Sent to the Harvest

Have you ever been so focused on what was next that you completely missed what was right in front of you?

I think we’ve all been there.

We’re thinking about the next meeting, the next errand, the next ballgame, the next project around the house, or simply trying to make it through another busy day. Life has a way of keeping our eyes fixed on our schedules instead of the people walking beside us.

That’s exactly what struck me as I studied John 4 last week.

The disciples had just returned from town carrying food. They had done exactly what they normally would do. Meanwhile, Jesus had stayed behind at a well and had a conversation with a Samaritan woman that would change her life forever.

The disciples saw lunch.

Jesus saw a harvest.

As they encouraged Him to eat, Jesus replied,

“My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work.” (John 4:34)

Then He looked toward the town and said,

“Lift up your eyes, and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!” (John 4:35)

I wonder how many times I’ve prayed for God to give me an opportunity to share the gospel while walking right past the opportunity He had already placed in front of me.

Maybe the harvest isn’t somewhere far away.

Maybe it’s the neighbor you’ve waved to for years but never really talked with.

Maybe it’s the cashier whose smile hides a broken heart.

Maybe it’s the coworker who seems to have everything together but quietly wonders if life has any purpose.

Maybe it’s the family sitting beside you at the ball field.

Or maybe it’s the person standing behind you in line at the grocery store.

One of my favorite parts of this story is that the disciples and Jesus were looking at the very same people.

The difference wasn’t the crowd.

The difference was their perspective.

The disciples saw an interruption.

Jesus saw an invitation.

The disciples saw another ordinary day.

Jesus saw eternity.

The disciples saw people from Samaria.

Jesus saw people made in the image of God.

It makes me wonder how often my problem isn’t a lack of opportunity but a lack of vision.

Perhaps one of the most dangerous prayers we can pray is also one of the simplest:

“Lord…help me see people the way You see them.”

Because if He answers that prayer, it will change more than our perspective.

It will change our conversations.

It will change our priorities.

It may even change someone’s eternity.

As followers of Christ, we’ve never been called to simply fill our calendars. We’ve been called to join Jesus in His mission.

The harvest has never belonged to us.

It belongs to Him.

He simply invites us to step into the field.

So tomorrow morning, before you check your phone, head to work, or begin your routine, pause for just a moment and ask God for one thing:

“Jesus, help me lift up my eyes today.”

You may be surprised to discover that the harvest has been there all along.
