Matthew 28:18-20 | Sent By The King

There are some words that carry so much weight that they change the course of a person’s life forever.

“I do.”

“You’re hired.”

“You’re forgiven.”

And perhaps for every follower of Jesus, one of the most life-changing words He ever spoke is simply this:

“Go.”

Too often we think of Christianity as something that ends in a church pew. We faithfully attend worship, study God’s Word, enjoy fellowship with other believers, and those things are all good and necessary. But Jesus never intended for His followers to simply gather. He gathered them so that He could send them.

Before Jesus ascended into heaven, He didn’t give His disciples a list of programs to build or buildings to construct. He gave them a mission.

“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations…” (Matthew 28:19)

What has always struck me about the Great Commission is that Jesus began with His authority before He gave the command.

“All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.”

In other words, we don’t go because we are capable. We go because He is King.

If sharing your faith has ever intimidated you, you’re not alone. Maybe you’ve wondered if you’ll have the right words. Maybe you’re afraid someone will reject you or ask a question you can’t answer. But the mission has never depended on the strength of the messenger. It has always depended on the authority of the One who sends us.

The same Jesus who calmed storms, opened blind eyes, conquered death, and walked out of the tomb now says to His church, “Go.”

Not because we know everything.

Not because we’ll do everything perfectly.

But because He promises, “I am with you always.”

As our church prepares for another Fourth of July celebration and fireworks outreach, I’m reminded that while people will gather to watch lights fill the night sky, many of them are walking through spiritual darkness. They’ll come looking for an enjoyable evening, but what they truly need is the hope found only in Jesus Christ.

Maybe God has already placed someone on your heart.

A neighbor.

A coworker.

A family member.

A friend.

Someone who needs more than a friendly smile—they need the gospel.

This week, instead of simply asking God to bless your day, ask Him to open a door for you to share Christ with one person. Pray for boldness. Pray for compassion. Pray that God would let you see people the way Jesus sees them.

The Great Commission isn’t reserved for pastors, missionaries, or church staff. It belongs to every believer.

The church has never been called to simply fill seats!

Let’s be a people who are not only gathered by Christ but sent by Him.
