Appreciate Today

Life has a funny way of reminding us that seasons never stand still.
For years my wife and I dreamed about building a home. It was one of those quiet dreams you carry while life is busy—raising kids, working long days, serving the church, paying bills, and putting a little away when you can. Slowly, year after year, that dream began to move from “maybe someday” to “it might actually happen.”
And now, by God’s grace, we’re getting to build it.
It’s something we’re incredibly thankful for. Scripture reminds us in Psalm 127:1, “Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain.” Every board, every wall, every step of the process is a reminder that the Lord has been kind to us far beyond what we deserve.
But there’s another realization that comes along with it.
As exciting as this season is, it also reminds us how quickly time moves.
When the dream of building a home first began, our kids were little. Life felt slower. Ballgames, school events, church nights, family dinners, and all the chaos that comes with raising children filled our days.
Now, as the house becomes real, the kids are older.
One heading to college and nearing adulthood. One in the midst of High School and the eve of driving and the girls growing before our eyes every day. The years that once seemed so long now feel like they passed in the blink of an eye.
And it’s a reminder that while dreams for the future are good, we must be careful not to miss the moments God has placed right in front of us today.
Scripture speaks to this in Psalm 90:12:
“So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”
Wisdom isn’t just planning for tomorrow.
It’s appreciating today.
It’s understanding that the little moments we sometimes rush through are often the ones we’ll miss the most later.
The laughter around the dinner table.
The late-night conversations.
The ballgames and car rides.
The ordinary evenings that one day won’t feel so ordinary.
Life is full of seasons.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 reminds us,
“For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven.”
Some seasons are about building.
Some are about growing.
Some are about letting go.
And every one of them is a gift from God.
So while we’re grateful for this new chapter and the blessing of building a home we once only dreamed about, we’re also reminded of something even more important:
Houses are built with wood and stone, but homes are built in moments.
And those moments pass quickly.
So hold them close.
Be present.
Enjoy the season God has you in right now.
Because one day you’ll look back and realize these were the days that mattered most.
And as Scripture reminds us in James 1:17,
“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights.”
This season—just like the ones before it—is one of those gifts.
