The Lesser of Two Evils

For many years now, our political conversations have often sounded less like choosing the best path forward and more like debating which candidate is simply the least problematic. Many have even used the phrase, “the lesser of two evils.” That reality should concern us. It speaks not only to frustration with individual candidates, but to a deeper degradation of politics and public discourse in general.

At the same time, we live in an age where more information is available at our fingertips than ever before. Every statement, every mistake, every controversy, and every opinion can be amplified in seconds. We are more informed in some ways, yet often more sensationalized in our reactions. Outrage spreads faster than wisdom, and loud opinions can drown out thoughtful truth.

That brings us to the recent image posted by President Donald Trump that appeared to depict him in a scene resembling Jesus healing someone. As Christians, we should be grieved and outraged by any apparent portrayal of any man in the place of Christ. Jesus is not a prop for politics, branding, or personality. He alone is the Son of God, Savior, and King of Kings. “You shall have no other gods before Me” (Exodus 20:3).

At the same time, we should remember that President Trump is still a man. He is not infallible. He is not perfect. He is not the hope of the world. And neither is any politician on the left or the right. Every earthly leader is flawed, limited, and in need of grace just like the rest of us. Scripture says plainly, “for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

This is why the Christian’s ultimate confidence cannot rest in parties, platforms, or personalities. Our hope is not found in the White House, but in the throne room of Heaven. There is only one perfect King, and His name is Jesus. His rule is righteous, His wisdom is flawless, and His kingdom will never end (Isaiah 9:6-7).

So yes—stand for truth. Reject what dishonors Christ. But do not lose sight of the bigger need. Our nation does not merely need better campaigns or cleaner politics. Our nation needs repentance. Our nation needs revival. Our nation needs hearts turned back to God.

“If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

May we be people who care more about holiness than headlines, more about prayer than posting, and more about the reign of Christ than the rise of any man.
